NI Conservatives’ representatives in Strangford have urged ‘open minds’ about the future of Exploris Aquarium. Bill McKendry and Johnny Andrews are in the steering group, which is attempting to secure the future of the facility.
“Exploris is a great asset to the area and everyone hopes it can be saved”, explained Bill McKendry. “It contributes about £3 million per year to the economy in the area. That is something worth making compromises for and there are a range of solutions, which could feature the public sector which might allow that outcome.”
“It’s necessary to look beyond getting some money from the Stormont Executive, if Exploris is to survive in the long-term”, according to Johnny Andrews. “NIPSA and Unite are focussed quite short-sightedly on that solution, but there are options which could see cooperation between the public and private sectors or a private company taking over the operation.”
“We need a little pragmatism and we need the focus to be on jobs and the services Exploris provides”, Johnny continued. “The aquarium is a great asset and the emphasis should be on saving it for the whole community in Strangford”.
