NI Conservatives’ spokesman, Trevor Ringland, has welcomed the Orange Order’s offer to hold talks with the residents of Ardoyne, over contested marches close to the area.
“The Order is taking the initiative and that is to be welcomed”, Trevor stressed. “There were some concerns about the Parades Commission’s original decision to ban a march past Ardoyne shops on the morning of the 12th of July, because it did appear to reward some protesters who previously took part in violence in the area. It is extremely important that, as a principle, people are encouraged to act responsibly and violence is not rewarded.”
“The Orange Order is doing the responsible thing by offering full and frank discussions with Ardoyne residents. However all parties also need to continue be responsible, by respecting whatever decision the Parades Commission reaches on the proposed march next weekend, which has been made a precondition for talks. That does not necessarily mean agreeing with the determination, but it does mean abiding by it and doing everything possible to make sure that all participants, protesters and supporters respect the rule of law.”
“Problems around parades are not unsolvable, even in flashpoint areas, like north Belfast. The key is being prepared to share our communities with others and being prepared to show respect. That has to be the basis of a lasting solution for all sides.”
