NI Conservatives’ spokesman, Trevor Ringland, has spoken out against a bomb attack and street violence, which were aimed at the police over the weekend. The explosion took place close to the M5 motorway on Saturday evening. Rioting followed a flags protest in north Belfast on Friday evening.
“This latest attempt to kill officers was absolutely disgraceful”, Trevor said. “The people who plot these attacks and attempt to bring murder and mayhem back unto our streets deserve the strongest possible condemnation and we ought to do everything possible to ensure that they are caught. It is even more important that political leaders and the wider public give the police their fullest support at a time when misguided fanatics are attempting to kill and maim officers, so that the focus can be on bringing the perpetrators to justice.”
“It is appalling that while the PSNI works to foil this type of attack, it also has to deal with violence from rioters. In that context, the disorder on our streets is even more irresponsible, as are attempts by some political leaders to imply that the police and judges may not be acting impartially.”
“It is time for all the executive parties and for everyone else in the community who wants to see Northern Ireland move forward to get behind the police without any equivocation. Condemn all the lawbreakers, irrespective of their background and stand up properly for law and order, as well as the vast majority of people who simply want to get on with their lives without disruption, violence or fear.”
