Conservative Party spokesman and local businessman, Frank Shivers, has called upon the Executive to do “everything it can” to save 34 jobs in a masking tape manufacturing company in Bangor. Mr Shivers, who will be the party’s Assembly candidate in North Down, said the proposed job losses at 3M Bangor were “potentially damaging for the town and devastating for the employees involved”.
“3M has signalled its intention to move part of its operation to Italy and that is likely to mean 34 jobs lost, through compulsory redundancy”, Frank explained. “The company has announced a 45 day consultation, which means now is the time for the Executive to get involved and see whether these jobs can be saved.”
“Politicians at Stormont have stood back while manufacturing in Northern Ireland has been decimated. The 3M announcement is cruelly timed and it has the potential to make it an unhappy Christmas for 34 people in Bangor. It’s also a clearly a blow to the town and our local economy. We need the Executive to do its utmost to save these jobs and a coherent strategy to prevent further job losses in manufacturing across Northern Ireland”.
