NI Conservatives’ education spokeswoman, Annika Nestius-Brown, has welcomed Northern Ireland primary schools’ outstanding performance in global league tables.
“It’s a phenomenal achievement to be in the top 10 in both primary reading and primary maths, topping the European table for maths”, Annika said. “These statistics provide solid evidence of the world class schools and dedicated teachers which we have at primary level.”
“At secondary level too we are producing some of the students who are most sought after by colleges and universities. It’s unfortunate that all this good work is threatened by a lack of leadership from the executive and the minister for education, with continuing chaos over selection and an ideological campaign against some of our top schools.”
“We have many marvellous schools and teachers in Northern Ireland and the league tables also show that the potential of our young people is huge. We can’t allow that to be undermined by a political crusade from Sinn Féin and that party’s attempts to consolidate its power over young people. The future of education here should be firmly in the hands of schools, parents and pupils.”
