An NI Conservatives’ constituency officer, who was formerly Managing Director of the Kingsmill linen mill, has condemned a sectarian attack on a memorial to victims of the Kingsmill massacre, just outside Whitecross in County Armagh.
John Lund said, “This was an act of unspeakable cruelty and disrespect to long suffering victims who have yet to see justice. It was also an attempt to intimidate people around the area, by thugs who are operating in the name of republicanism and who already threatened workers constructing the monument.”
“The Kingsmill massacre had a horrendous effect on the local community, not just inflicting pain on bereaved relatives, but also decimating the area’s economy for generations. The victims’ families have borne their sacrifice with incredible grace and dignity down through the years.”
“This was a simple memorial which remembered the victims of one of the most callous and senseless massacres of the Troubles. Its desecration is a hate crime of the most heartless type. I hope that Republican politicians will join all right thinking people in condemning this attack and appealing for anyone who may have any information to help police with their enquiries.”
