Paul Leeman, Chairman of the North Down Conservatives, has congratulated everyone involved in successfully removing oil from a damaged tanker, just off the Copeland Islands.
“Over 54,000 tonnes of oil were removed from The Genmar Companion, which will allow repairs to the ship to take place,” Paul said. “I want to thank everyone involved for conducting the operation professionally, patiently and successfully.”
“Naturally, when oil is involved, there’s a certain amount of risk but the operation remained in the hands of experts. Quite properly, the vessel was kept in the sheltered waters of Belfast Lough, which prevented it from sustaining further damage and potentially posing a risk to the environment. Everyone involved deserves hearty congratulations for a good job, well done.”
