Trevor Ringland, the NI Conservatives’ spokesman for sport, has described Rory McIlroy’s USPGA victory as “a landmark achievement for one of Northern Ireland’s finest ambassadors”.
“Off the back of the wonderful performances of our Olympians, Rory’s win is a marvellous accomplishment. Astonishingly Northern Irish golfers have now won 4 out of the last 11 of the sport’s major championships. For a small country, those figures are staggering, and it underlines our credentials as the home of major champions.”
“The Ryder Cup is approaching at the end of September and, once again, Northern Ireland’s stars will be at the heart of the European team’s efforts to defeat the USA. We are justly proud of their achievements and this latest triumph for Rory McIlroy underlines that we are living through a golden era for Northern Irish golf”.
