NI Conservatives’ spokesman, Mark Brotherston, has urged political leaders to give “unequivocal backing to the rule of law”, after the Parades Commission issued its determination on a controversial Orange Order march, which has been refused permission to walk along part of the Crumlin Road, in Belfast.
“The issue of parading still stirs strong reactions in Northern Ireland, but the priority for every political leader at the present time should be to exercise a moderating influence and urge respect, at all times, for the rule of law”, Mark said. “There is absolutely no excuse for politicians to inflame passions further, or for political point scoring, at a time when there are tensions on the streets. If there are protests or counter-protests, they must be peaceful.”
“It’s not enough for leaders to avoid directly advocating violence. They have to be absolutely unequivocal when it comes to condemning disorder of any type. They have to offer their full support to the PSNI, as it enforces the Parades Commission’s ruling. As for a long-term solution to parading disputes, examples in Londonderry and elsewhere show what is possible. Work should continue to reach an agreement in north Belfast, but the arguments over this march cannot be allowed to poison relationships or stop progress in Northern Ireland.”
