Irwin Armstrong, chairman of Northern Ireland Conservatives, described remarks about a local judge published in Peter Hain’s memoirs as “an extraordinary and ill-advised outburst”.
“The former Secretary of State’s comments are highly inappropriate and irresponsible, particularly given that he is a serving MP and part of the Opposition’s front bench. He made some very serious insinuations about Judge Girvan’s integrity and the motives behind his decision making.”
“Given Judge Girvan’s senior position, Mr Hain is effectively attacking the whole of the judiciary in Northern Ireland. That may generate publicity for his book, but it can only damage and undermine the legal system here.”
“The judiciary in Northern Ireland is rightly recognised for its resolute independence, impartiality and application of the highest standards and Mr Hain's attack is wholly misplaced.”
