Trevor Ringland, spokesman for the NI Conservatives, has described the government’s economic package for Northern Ireland as a “marvellous opportunity” and called upon the executive to “deliver on its potential”.
“The prime minister and the secretary of state are proving yet again just how committed the Conservative led government is to Northern Ireland, with this latest announcement on the economy”, Trevor stressed. “With our colleagues in London, NI Conservatives have been emphasising consistently the importance of building a shared future, boosting the private sector and building infrastructure. These are the themes which are central to the government’s economic plan.”
“David Cameron is delivering an opportunity to develop a successful, sustainable, private-sector led economy in Northern Ireland. To make this a reality the executive has to deliver on its promises around a shared future. That means tackling the issues around emblems, parades and the past, which were ignored in the First Ministers’ latest strategy and which the two biggest parties have used consistently to play politics with people’s emotions.”
“That old, divisive way of thinking has to end. We need a genuine commitment to build a harmonious, interdependent Northern Ireland, at peace with itself and its neighbours and maximising its potential relationships with the rest of the world. We need jobs and enterprise at the centre of our economy and at the centre of policy making. We need rapid decisions on things like infrastructure payments, so that the extra money which government provides is used to create employment. We need action on projects like enterprise zones, which the rest of the UK is using to help struggling areas catch up economically. David Cameron has proved his commitment to Northern Ireland and his ability to deliver. Northern Ireland’s politicians must now show that they’re capable of working for people here or a marvellous opportunity will be wasted.”
