The Northern Ireland Conservative chairman, Irwin Armstrong, has hailed Darren Clarke’s triumph in the Open Championship at Royal St George’s.
“Darren Clarke’s achievement is remarkable”, Irwin commented, “It proves that fairytales can come true”.
“Northern Ireland rules the world of golf at the moment after the Major wins by Graeme McDowell and Rory McIlroy. In many ways, though, Clarke’s success is even more extraordinary. At 42 years old many pundits suggested that Darren’s best days were behind him and his chances of winning a Major were gone”.
“He defied the critics and defied the odds to carry off golf’s greatest prize with skill and panache. Darren’s victory should be an inspiration to us all and it is quite rightly a source of pride for everyone in Northern Ireland.”
