NI Conservatives’ culture spokesman, Trevor Ringland, has commended the idea of ‘booze free’ celebrations for St Patrick’s Day and said that Belfast City Council has work to do to create a “fun, family-orientated, inclusive event”.
“It is a good idea to promote alcohol free St Patrick’s celebrations, where the emphasis is on attracting families and enjoying culture”, Trevor stressed. “A special St Patrick’s Day market, films and music, these would all be welcome initiatives.”
“The 17th March should be a day for everyone on this island to celebrate what we share, whatever our background. Belfast City Council should continue to examine ways to make sure everyone enjoys St Patrick’s Day, whether it is by organising alcohol free events with a family friendly atmosphere, or ensuring that political symbols don’t encroach and make part of our community uncomfortable during the celebrations.”
“We have a shared heritage on this island and part of that is St Patrick. The day is a great opportunity to come together and everything should be done to encourage an inclusive atmosphere.”
